ANDERS PETERSEN — CAFÉ LEHMITZ

Anders Petersen’s legendary photographic portrait of Café Lehmitz, the notorious bar on Hamburg’s Reeperbahn. Shot in the late 1960s, Petersen’s raw and intimate black-and-white photographs document the outsiders, lovers, sex workers, workers and regulars who formed the bar’s extraordinary community.

Originally published in 1978, Café Lehmitz has become a landmark of postwar European photography. One of its photographs was later used by Tom Waits for the cover of Rain Dogs.
